Your alarm goes off and all you want is to get a little more sleep. Not that ten more minutes of dozing is really going to help you feel any more rested, but it’s worth a shot. Ten minutes pass in the space of about ten seconds and the alarm is going off again. You hit the snooze once more because… why not?

The truth is, that snooze button is not about getting more sleep for you. It’s more about simply not getting out of bed.

I’ve been there. I’ve done that. I got the T-shirt. And the mug, and the cross-stitched pillow, and pretty much every other weird decoration people make for the “Been there done that” stuff.

Over the years of dealing with waking up exhausted, I’ve heard a lot of advice on how to deal with it. Go to bed earlier. Get more exercise during the day, it will help you rest at night. Don’t eat *Insert name of food* before bed. (It was usually pickles. Which I love eating before bed. I’m weird.)

The fact of the matter is, I listened to that advice, and it certainly did help sometimes. (Well, not the pickles. Let’s face it. I’m going to eat pickles.) But even when I followed all the advice, I still woke up the next day not ready to wake up. Sometimes it wasn’t even because I was tired. I just didn’t want to get out of bed.

And then, I discovered a secret that changed everything.

Now, I can wake up in the mornings without rolling my eyes and groaning. I can wake up and feel energized and ready for the day. And now waking up in the morning has nothing to do with what I did or didn’t do yesterday. It has nothing to do what I did or didn’t eat last night. Instead, it has everything to do with what I am going to do today: my morning routine.

Are you ready to go into more detail about how to start a morning routine? Great, but for now, I want to let you know why a morning routine is a life-saver, what are the advantages of having a good morning routine, and why you need to have one, too! So here we go.

  1. No more dreading the moment your alarm goes off. And goes off again. And goes off… again. Having a morning routine can help you get out of bed. Sometimes I even wake up before the alarm these days. Imagine if you could fire your alarm clock, but not sacrifice your productivity.
  2. Speaking of productivity, getting your morning routine done can make you feel productive, and feeling productive first thing in the morning helps you be productive the rest of the day. It’s a beautiful chain of events.
  3. Having the right kind of morning routine can actually help you get to bed on time and get the exercise you need in the day so you can sleep better. (You can still eat pickles before bed if you want to. I won’t judge. But maybe you should try this trick instead.)
  4. You can make a shift from negative energy to positive energy. This is an important step to take. You’d be amazed what kind of difference there can be when you don’t wake up, groan, and slam that snooze button, (Or tap it really hard. Or swipe with vengeance. Good morning, cell phone.) But this won’t affect only your mornings. Your entire life will change if you can harness the power of positive energy.
  5. Last of all, a morning routine can help keep you going through tough times. Let’s get serious here. Life is hard and this is really about more than just getting out of bed. You and I need some real support and love in our lives these days. One of the most important people we need support and love from, is ourselves. You. You need to love yourself.

I know that maybe you think you’re simply not a morning person, it’s your nature to hate the mornings and you can’t change who you are, but let me tell you that change is possible. I’ve been there. I’ve been the grouchy bear growling in the mornings, and I have been able to change. If I can, you can too.

If you’re gonna have to get up, you might as well enjoy it.

So go make a morning routine and make sure to listen to it daily. You can get better sleep, have a more productive life, and love and support yourself. The ten minutes it will take you to read it will definitely be worth more than ten minutes of sleep.
